WSP claims little or no cost measures could cut bills by 10 per cent, outweighing costs of compliance and carbon allowances

Basic energy efficiency measures could offset the nearly £500m that businesses are expected to spend this year complying with the Carbon Reduction Commitment (CRC) scheme, new analysis suggests.

Around 2,800 businesses will submit their first CRC reports at the end of this month, and according to government forecasts will spend a total of £715m on carbon allowances and a further £34m on compliance measures.

Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) projections show the scheme is expected to drive energy efficiency improvements that will save participating organisations £290m, or around 40 per cent of the cost of the scheme, during the first year.

The figures suggest a net spend on the CRC of £459m, or an average of £165,000 per registered company.

However, a new analysis from consultancy WSP Environment and Energy argues simple energy efficiency measures that can be rolled out at almost zero cost could save companies 10 to 20 per cent on their energy bills – enough to outweigh their annual CRC spend.

19th May 2011, LONDON, UK – ProcServe, a leading provider of eProcurement solutions, today announced that they have partnered with Planet Positive, an international environmental certification organisation, to promote lower emissions in the supply chain.

According to DEFRA, “Good procurement is sustainable procurement”, and “sustainable procurement is not simply about buying green products – although that is important. It’s also about ensuring energy and resource efficiency as well as long term cost effectiveness.”

Sustainable procurement is increasingly important in the public sector. All UK central government departments and their related organisations will need to meet the minimum mandatory specifications in the recently announced Government Buying Standards.  Following the standards will help central departments reach their target to reduce CO2 emissions by 10% this year and drive the development of the Green economy. However, a recent survey conducted by ProcServe and Planet Positive indicates that 69% of suppliers are unaware of the new Government Buying Standards.

Tough rules to protect consumers when they insulate their properties are to be brought in as part of legislation to implement the Green Deal, Chris Huhne announced today.

The Green Deal, due to start in 2012, is the Government’s new and radical way of enabling private companies to make energy efficiency available to all at no upfront cost. The work to upgrade the property will be paid back from the saving on energy bills.

Millions of Britain’s properties – whether owned or rented – will be made warmer, cosier and cheaper to run. The Energy Bill, published in Parliament today, sets out for the first time how the Green Deal will work. It will be available for both household and business premises.

Hammonds Furniture is now on course to make big savings by reducing energy usage at its Nuneaton store with expert help from a building energy management system (BEMS) supplied by t-mac Technologies.

Over the last six months, t-mac Technologies Ltd has worked with the furniture specialists, conducting a full site survey and reviewing current energy bills. A t-mac system was installed to first meter and monitor the site’s energy consumption, providing remote access to real-time energy data. Using the online energy analysis software, the team identified energy inefficiencies and areas for improvement to reduce cost, consumption and carbon for the Hammonds store.

Having analysed the data collected from all measurable sources of energy consumption including heating and cooling, lighting and mains electricity, the t-mac team, with Hammonds, used their findings to put a plan in place using t-mac to control energy use. Through t-mac’s online software the control strategy was implemented to cover lighting, heating and cooling equipment to meet the targets and aspirations of Hammonds for improving the quality of their energy management in line with the quality of furniture.

Following Wednesday’s Spending Review, companies will no longer see financial rewards from the CRC Energy Efficiency Scheme. The revenue raised by carbon allowance sales will no longer be recycled back to organisations performing well in the scheme, but will be used to support public finances including environmental schemes. The cost of allowances – currently £12 per tonne of CO2 – will in future be decided through the budget process.

This effectively makes the CRC Energy Efficiency Scheme a new carbon tax on larger companies and public sector organisations.

Rachel Cooper, energy consultant for global energy management specialist Schneider Electric, believes the best way for businesses to prepare for the scheme is to accurately monitor and manage energy usage.

Energy Reduction VerificationThe British Standards Institution (BSI) has announced that world leading air filtration manufacturer, Camfil Farr, has become the first company to join its recently launched Kitemark scheme for Energy Reduction Verification (ERV). The scheme independently verifies and certifies those organisations that achieve a reduction in carbon emissions through lower energy use.

The British Standards Institution (BSI) has announced that world leading air filtration manufacturer, Camfil Farr, has become the first company to join its recently launched Kitemark scheme for Energy Reduction Verification (ERV). The scheme independently verifies and certifies those organisations that achieve a reduction in carbon emissions through lower energy use.

With its UK headquarters in Haslingden, Lancashire, Camfil Farr has a reputation for promoting the efficient use of energy and has demonstrated that air filters directly influence energy consumption within the air handling units which heat, cool and clean the air in air conditioning systems.

The company aims to educate property managers and owners about the substantial benefits of replacing existing filtration assets with low energy air filters. Camfil, the world leader in the production and development of air filters, became the first manufacturing company in the UK to be awarded BSI’s Energy Management Standard BS EN 16001 in July 2010. As a manufacturing and service orientated business, Camfil Farr took the opportunity to examine its own current and future energy usage.

In light of rising and unstable energy costs, increasing legislation and the government’s policy of driving energy consumption reduction, the company wanted to do as much as it could to demonstrate social responsibility while helping its employees, suppliers and customers to learn how to reduce energy and save money.

Bill Wilkinson, Camfil Farr Managing Director commented:

“Although we are not a huge energy consumer, the total savings achieved were remarkable. In the first year (2008) we achieved a saving of over 22% of our total energy bill and in the verification year (2009) a further 14.6%. This represented an annual saving of nearly £200,000 from an energy bill which exceeded £500,000 in 2007.”

Bill Wilkinson continues:

“Camfil have always been energy aware, this awareness is an integral part of our culture and our operations. We have already had a lean management culture”.

When asked what advice he would give to other companies seeking to join the scheme, Wilkinson said: “Simply doing nothing is just not acceptable, but as we found out, by implementing a company-wide Employee Engagement Scheme, every employee contributed to the substantial energy savings that we made”.
